Report highlights scale of Indiaâs waste management crisis; outlines solutions to manage legacy waste through bio-mining, bioremediation NEW DELHI, 20 February 2025: FICCI, jointly with NEEV Fund, today released a report âBio-mining and Bioremediation of Legacy Waste Dumpsitesâ, during the 9th Sustainable Business Futures Summit (SBFS) 2025. The report highlights the scale of Indiaâs waste management crisis and outlines sustainable solutions for managing legacy waste through bio-mining and bioremediation. Dr Sujit Kumar Bajpayee, Member, Commission for Air Quality Management, Government of India acknowledged bio-mining and bioremediation as viable solutions for waste recovery, land reclamation, and circular economy integration. Dr Bajpayee underscored the dumpsites containing valuable recyclable materials like metals, plastics and other materials, which through biomining operations may potentially reduce load on the need for new materials and promote circular economy. He highlighted the dual benefit of biomining addressing environmental challenges associated with landfills while creating profitable ventures through resource recovery and land reclamation. Dr Bajpayee further stressed the importance of collaboration among public and private sectors, policy enforcement, and community engagement to address the legacy waste crisis effectively. Reaffirming that sustainability is no longer optional, he called for collective action to drive long-term environmental improvements. Mr Shreevar Kheruka, Chair, FICCI Environment & Climate Change Committee and Managing Director & CEO, Borosil Ltd called for viewing the environmental and climate challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles. He underlined the untapped domestic and global opportunities available for the industries in the carbon capture, carbon trading, and green products space. He encouraged a problem-solving mindset, urging businesses and individuals to leverage such conferences for ideas and solutions to embrace change and drive meaningful impact. âBy adopting a forward-looking approach, India can build a sustainable future that future generations will be proud of,â said Mr Kheruka. Dr Rambabu Paravastu, Co-Chair, FICCI Climate Change Sub-Committee and Chief Sustainability Officer, Greenko Group emphasized that sustainability is a long-term journey requiring innovation, collaboration, and partnerships across industries. âWhile Indian industries, particularly large businesses, are taking significant steps to meet the countryâs climate commitmentsâsuch as green hydrogen production and renewable energy targetsâaligning the entire value chain is crucial for lasting impact,â he added. Addressing carbon emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3 is necessary, involving sectors like agriculture and mining, noted Dr Paravastu. He stressed that government support through incentives and policies must align with industry ambitions to ensure sustained progress. He further added that sustainability efforts must be inclusive, ensuring small and medium enterprises are also part of the transition, making the journey more impactful. FICCI, under the aegis of its Centre for Sustainability Leadership, organized the 9th Sustainable Business Futures Summit (SBFS) 2025 focused on âBuilding a Legacy for Green Nationâ.
