The Indian school education system is one of the largest and most complex in the world. 54% of all 1.46 million K-12 schools in India, are managed by the Central Government/ State governments and 21% are managed by local bodies/municipal corporations. In order to facilitate estimated additional students of 300 million by 2030 through expansion and quality upgradation, the Indian K-12 sector would need up to INR 20,00,000 cr (USD 333 bn) of investment by 2030.
FICCI has been active for over a decade in the education (higher, vocational and school) space and has been the first mover from the private sector in suggesting research based policy reforms to the government. FICCI ARISE endeavours to support and strengthen these efforts in order to unify the sectors’ voice to create a meaningful impact on regulators at state and central level despite increased outlays on education.

The presence and growth of private un-aided K-12 schools is quite widespread across both urban and rural areas and they are playing a key role in nation building by shaping future generations and creating future leaders. Recognizing the significance and importance of the sector, FICCI School Education Committee has been active since three years and was recently reconstituted into FICCI ARISE (Alliance for Re-Imagining School Education). The primary focus of the alliance is policy advocacy, defining norms for standards and transparency, advocating 21st century readiness and facilitating Capacity Building.
There are several associations and forums of private schools that are active in the country. FICCI ARISE endeavours to support and strengthen these efforts in order to unify the sectors’ voice to create a meaningful impact on regulators at state and central level.

Due to "poor learning outcomes" with the progression in class, there is an increased enrolment in independent schools which today stands at 43% in primary, 54.4%secondary education and 60.3% at the senior secondary level.
- The present total Government spending on school education and literacy (Centre and States combined) accounts for about 2.9 % of GDP
- Government focus on School Education is evident through its programs like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Mid Day meals, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, Right to Education Act and launch of vocational education programme in schools through the NVEQF, etc.
- Vocationalization of school education has been strengthened through implementation of NVEQF by the MHRD, GoI
As progress is made in terms of access to schooling, however, ensuring learning remains a challenge. In a majority of India’s schools, educational quality remains unacceptably low.
