The food processing sector in India is essential for the diversification of agricultural activities, enhancing value addition, and producing surplus agro-food products for export. This sector bridges agriculture and industry, boosting the value of agricultural produce, ensuring better prices for farmers, and generating global demand for Indian agricultural products.
India's food and beverage packaged industry is witnessing significant growth. The market size is expected to rise from $33.7 billion in 2023 to $46.3 billion by 2028. This growth is driven by rising consumer demand for packaged products due to changing consumption habits and lifestyles, increased awareness, economic growth, demographic shifts, a growing working population, and the expansion of retail and e-commerce sectors.
The FICCI Food Processing division plays a key role in dealing with policy issues to get an audience with the government and make industry’s voice heard. It has been working very closely with industry members for the growth and business sustainability of the food industry. Presently, FICCI is leading the industry voice in addressing concerns hovering around Plastic Waste Management, Legal Metrology Amendment Rules which if implemented can have significant impact on sustainability of food businesses.
Currently processed food products including the HFSS products are perceived unhealthy at large. FICCI is proactively advocating on this issue with the regulator in consultation with all stakeholders to ensure it gets implemented in accordance with industries expectation and should not go against ‘ease of doing business’.
Apart from policy advocacy role, the division also organises its annual flagship conference - FOODWORLD India- The Global Convention for Food Business & Industry; releases knowledge paper; work towards trade facilitation and investment promotion and liasoning with international organisations
